Getting Organized
Most people have a new years resolution. I basically just have one goal. To get organized. Currently where we live it not easy to be sustainable. I have to drive 30-45 minutes to go to a grocery store that has refill dry goods. A 45 minutes drive to refill our cleaning supplies. And a 50 minutes drive to get our hair care and body wash refill. Now all these stores are closer to my work. Work is currently 35-40 minutes from my house. I am able to stop at these stores depending on if I get out of work on time and how bad the traffic is. If I am…

How to Recycle
When we first began recycling at our local waste center it said they took plastics 1-7. We threw all kinds of plastics in them. However, I do believe that was a mistake on their part. A few years later they renovated the waste center and now they only accept plastic numbers 1 and 2. Since then, if I have to buy plastic products, I try to look for a 1 or 2 on the container. Recycling can be really confusing though. As a child I was taught if you see the recycling symbol you can recycle it. However, that is not always true. The recycle symbol with a number on…

How to Start Your Zero Waste or Sustainable Journey?
First Step: DO NOT JUDGE YOURSELF! I took a hard look around my house and became completely overwhelmed with how much plastic was in my home. I thought I was a horrible person for buying all this plastic. All those single use plastic products. I went through so many plastic water bottles a day! We recycled. But that was it. Second Step: Take a note of what you buy weekly at the grocery stores. You can start by trying to avoid products wrapped in plastics. Or only buying items you can recycle the packaging. Start refilling your water bottles at home. Invest in water filters and reusable water bottles. Make…

Why be Sustainable?
The answer is complicated. For some people it is simple but for me the answer is not. I grew up on a farm, raised horses, we had a huge garden, we always recycled, but we never reduced or reused inside the home. I went back and forth from wanting to be a free hippie loving the earth and wanting to have all the newest clothes and make-up. It was never a balance for me. It was either/or. After Matt and I got married we made sure we recycled. But we recycled all wrong. We bought organic, but we never cared about how much plastic it was wrapped in. We tried…
